Realist Painters Tend to Fall into One of Two Camps.

And…

…The Past

I’m Arjun Rajan.

I’m a visual artist, specializing in Oil and Tempera painting. And my work is something of a paradox. On one hand, I take influence from painters from the early, to High Renaissance – their rich, saturated colors, and stylized, often idealized depictions of reality. I use many of the same techniques, building up paintings in many layers, and going through elaborate underpainting stages.

On the other hand, I use a full color palette, and modern materials. My work is mounted on Plastic and Aluminum panels. Venetian Red sits alongside Cadmium Red, Ultramarine Blue alongside Phthalo Blue.

I at once aim to keep alive the methods and techniques of the Old Masters, and on the other to reject them.

Ultimately though, one goal permeates the entirety of my work. My objective is to connect with others through art, and visual storytelling.

Ultimately, when it comes to materials, or technique –

the road towards a finished picture is never a consistent one. What works well for the picture comes first, tradition or deviation from it second. And above all else…

Nothing But The Best Will Do.
